How I Got into Cyber Security

After graduating from Lincoln University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, I immediately identified my passion for cyber security. Eager to pursue this field, I obtained my CompTIA Security+ certification in the summer of 2013. My first job post-graduation was as a help desk technician at Alton Community School District in Alton, IL, coincidentally the same district from which I had graduated.

During my tenure at the school district, I gained valuable hands-on experience working with various tools such as web filters, Active Directory, Windows servers, SCCM, and network switches. Seeking further growth, I transitioned to a position at St. Louis Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) as a help desk employee. At MSD, I went above and beyond my role, consistently contributing to projects beyond my scope and earning recognition from my peers.

Motivated to enhance my skills, I actively learned from network engineers and firewall administrators, demonstrating not only my ability to absorb knowledge but also to implement it effectively in the work environment. This dedication eventually led to a pivotal opportunity to join the IT Security department at MSD as an IT Specialist I – Security Analyst.

Through continuous effort and commitment, I proved my capabilities, resulting in a promotion within one year to IT Specialist II – Security Analyst. This is my current position, reflecting my ongoing dedication to the field of cybersecurity and my commitment to professional growth and excellence.
